Sir Max Aitken Museum

The Prospect on Cowes High Street on the Isle of Wight was the home of Sir Max Aitken Bt DSO, DFC. The Prospect became well known as the place where he entertained many friends and in 1979 he created the Prospect Museum Trust with its unique collection of marine artefacts. He died in 1985 but this very personal museum is a lasting reminder of a very remarkable man.

The magnificent 18th Century sail maker’s loft, where Britannia’s mainsail was made, was acquired and restored by Sir Max Aitken in 1947. Today, with its traditional splendour, the building boasts Sir Max Aitken’s personal collection of nautical artefacts, a display of marine paintings, nautical instruments and yachting memorabilia.
